Packing Tips
Whether you're heading out on a dune buggy ride, a morning safari, or a full-day desert adventure, knowing what to wear can make the difference between a comfortable experience and an uncomfortable one. Dubai's desert presents unique conditions — intense sun, fine sand, and temperatures that swing dramatically between seasons.
The Golden Rules for Desert Dressing
- Cover up — more fabric = less sunburn and sand on your skin
- Go light in colour — light colours reflect sunlight; dark colours absorb heat
- Choose breathable fabrics — linen, cotton, and moisture-wicking synthetics are ideal
- Protect your feet — closed-toe shoes only for adventure activities
- Layer for evenings — desert nights can be surprisingly cool
What to Wear: Season by Season
☀️ Summer (May–Sep)
Ultra-light, breathable fabrics. Moisture-wicking base layer. Light-coloured long sleeves. Wide-brimmed hat. SPF 50+ sunscreen is essential.
🌤️ Spring / Autumn (Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov)
Light trousers or shorts. Short or long-sleeve top. Light jacket for evenings. Perfect weather for most visitors.
❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb)
Layer up — days are warm (20-25°C) but desert nights drop quickly. Bring a jacket or hoodie for camp evenings. Comfortable casual wear works well.
The Perfect Desert Safari Outfit (Head to Toe)
Head & Face
- Wide-brimmed hat or cap (we provide helmets for buggy rides, but you'll want sun protection at camp)
- UV-blocking sunglasses
- SPF 50+ sunscreen — reapply every 2 hours
- A light scarf or bandana (great for keeping sand off your face on windy days)
Upper Body
- Best choice: Long-sleeve lightweight linen or cotton shirt in white, beige, or light blue
- Acceptable: Short-sleeve t-shirt (with sunscreen on arms)
- Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat or don't breathe well
Lower Body
- Best choice: Lightweight loose trousers — they protect from sand and sun without overheating
- Acceptable: Shorts (note: you may want sun protection on your legs)
- For the evening camp, longer trousers are more appropriate out of respect for local culture
Footwear — This is Critical
This is where most visitors get it wrong. Sandals and flip-flops are not allowed for buggy or quad bike rides. The desert terrain and vehicle components require closed-toe footwear at minimum.
- ✅ Trainers / sneakers — perfect
- ✅ Hiking boots or trail shoes — excellent
- ✅ Lightweight closed-toe shoes
- ❌ Sandals — not allowed for driving activities
- ❌ High heels — impractical and unsafe on sand
- ❌ Open-toe shoes of any kind for adventure activities
Tip: Wear socks! Sand gets everywhere, and socks prevent blisters from sand rubbing against your skin inside your shoes.

Special Considerations for Dune Buggy & Quad Bike Rides
When driving a buggy or quad bike, you'll wear a helmet and goggles provided by us. But your own clothing still matters:
- Long sleeves protect arms from hot roll-cage metal on sunny days
- Avoid loose scarves or hanging accessories that could catch in the vehicle
- Tie long hair back before putting on your helmet
- Avoid wide-leg trousers that might get caught on vehicle controls

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear shorts on a desert safari?
+
Yes, shorts are fine for the adventure activities during the day. For the evening camp, longer trousers are more appropriate as a sign of respect for local customs. We recommend bringing a change of trousers if you plan to enjoy the full evening experience.
Do I need to cover my hair in the desert?
+
No — there is no requirement to cover your hair. However, a hat or cap is strongly recommended for sun protection. For buggy rides, a helmet is provided and mandatory, so tie long hair back before putting it on.
What's the best fabric for a desert safari?
+
Lightweight linen and cotton are the best natural fabrics — they breathe well and are comfortable in heat. Moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics (used in sportswear) are also excellent, especially in summer when sweat management is important.
