Quick Answer

The best time for a desert safari in Dubai is October to April, when temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C. Peak season is December to February — ideal weather, great light, and the full cultural camp experience. Summer months (May–September) are very hot but our early morning safaris departing before 7 AM are still excellent.

Dubai's desert is one of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth — towering red sand dunes, star-filled skies, and an otherworldly silence that the city never offers. But when you visit makes a big difference to your experience. Temperature, light quality, crowd levels, and which activities are comfortable all shift significantly through the year.

This guide is written from the perspective of a team that runs desert tours every single day of the year. We'll tell you exactly what each month looks like, what to expect, and which desert safari package suits each season.

Month-by-Month Desert Safari Guide

January & February — The Sweet Spot

January and February are the most comfortable months for a desert safari in Dubai. Daytime temperatures sit around 20–24°C, and evenings cool to 14–16°C — perfect for sitting around a camp fire after your BBQ desert safari dinner. The desert light in these months is soft and warm, making it exceptional for photography.

These months also coincide with Dubai's busiest tourist season, so book your safari at least 48 hours in advance. Our dune buggy packages and evening desert safaris sell out quickly on weekends during January and February.

Pro Tip: January & February

Book an overnight desert safari in January or February for the ultimate experience. The nights are cool and clear — ideal for stargazing in the Rub' al Khali desert. Average overnight temperature: 10–14°C. Bring a warm layer.

March & April — Shoulder Season

March is still excellent — temperatures are warming up but evenings remain comfortable at around 18–20°C. Activity levels are slightly lower than the January peak, which means you get more space on the dunes and better value on bookings.

By April, daytime temperatures reach 30–34°C. Evening safaris remain comfortable as the desert cools significantly after sunset. Morning safaris in April are warm but very enjoyable — the sand is already heated at sunrise, creating a beautiful shimmering effect across the dunes.

May & June — Early Summer Heat

May and June mark the transition into Dubai's intense summer. Daytime temperatures in May reach 38–40°C and climb above 42°C by June. Evening safaris in May are still manageable — the desert loses heat after sunset and by 8 PM temperatures drop to around 28°C.

From June onwards, we strongly recommend our Morning Desert Safari as the preferred option. Departing at 5:30–6:00 AM, you'll catch the desert at its most magical — golden hour light, cooler air, and the peaceful silence before the heat builds.

Summer Tip: Morning Safaris Only

In June, July, and August, our morning desert safaris depart at 5:30 AM and return by 10 AM before the peak heat. This is actually a special experience — the desert at sunrise in summer has an intense, copper-red glow that winter tours never see. Our Sunrise Photography Tour is particularly popular with photographers visiting in summer.

July & August — Peak Summer

July and August are Dubai's hottest and most humid months, with temperatures regularly hitting 43–45°C and high humidity near the coast. Desert activities in the afternoon or evening are uncomfortable. However, there's a silver lining: tourist numbers drop significantly, meaning less traffic, lower prices, and more exclusive experiences.

If you're visiting Dubai in July or August and want a desert experience, book our early morning dune buggy ride. The Polaris RZR session starts at 5:30 AM — you'll be navigating dunes as the sun rises, with temperatures around 30°C, before the intense heat arrives. It's genuinely one of the most memorable experiences we offer.

September & October — The Desert Wakes Up

September marks the slow retreat of summer heat. Temperatures begin dropping from around the 20th of September, and by October daytime highs are back down to 30–34°C — uncomfortable in direct sun but perfectly manageable for outdoor activities in the morning or late evening.

October is our recommended month for visitors who want to avoid the December crowds without compromising on weather. Evening safaris in October are excellent — the desert is still warm at sunset (around 26°C), cooler by 9 PM, and there's a stunning amber quality to the October desert light that's distinctly different from the cooler winter months.

November & December — The Return to Peak Season

November signals the start of Dubai's best tourist season. Temperatures drop to a very comfortable 24–28°C during the day and 17–20°C in the evenings. All safari types — morning, evening, and overnight — are excellent in November. Crowds are building but haven't yet hit the December peak.

December is Dubai's most popular tourist month. The Christmas and New Year period sees the highest visitor numbers of the year, and the desert is a top destination. Evening safaris, overnight camps, and dune buggy adventures all sell out quickly — book 3–5 days in advance during December. The reward: perfect weather, festive camp atmosphere, and stunning winter desert scenery.

Morning vs Evening Desert Safari — Which is Better by Season?

The choice between a morning and evening safari changes depending on when you visit:

Best Season for Desert Photography

The desert is photogenic year-round, but each season has distinct characteristics:

Our Sunrise Desert Photography Tour runs year-round and is timed to the golden hour for whatever month you're visiting. The guide adjusts departure times seasonally to always arrive at the best spot at the best light.

What to Wear — Season by Season

Oct–April (Cool Season)
  • Light layers for the day
  • Warm jacket for evenings
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes
  • Sunscreen (still needed)
  • Light scarf (dust/sand)
May–Sept (Hot Season)
  • Lightweight, loose-fit clothes
  • Light colours only
  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Hydration (bring water)
  • Closed-toe shoes (hot sand)

Does It Rain in Dubai's Desert?

Dubai receives an average of just 75mm of rainfall per year — one of the lowest in the world. The rare rainy days occur mostly between December and March. Desert safaris continue during light rain and the experience is actually remarkable: the smell of wet sand, the mist over the dunes, and the way light breaks through storm clouds creates photographs you simply cannot get on a clear day.

Heavy rain is extremely rare and would lead to tour rescheduling. We monitor weather daily and contact all guests in advance if any changes are needed.

Bottom Line: When Should You Book?

If you have a choice of when to visit Dubai, November to February gives you the best desert safari experience of the year. If you're already in Dubai during summer, don't skip the desert — book our Morning Desert Safari and experience the golden hour dunes that most tourists never see.
